Blog 6: A Look at Suicide in Low Rent Advertising

For paper three I plan to further develop the topic of suicide as a means of garnering attention in advertising. I will continue to evaluate through the lens of Kilbourne.

Jean Kilbourne’s “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence” explore the use of sex in advertising and the possible effects such advertising techniques have on our society.

I find the topic of suicide interesting but confusing. I find it troubling that one's emotional state could be so twisted as to cause a relatively young woman to sit in wait as a freight train approaches. A woman with a child no less, but still willing to do the unthinkable. The thoughts that must be going through a young man's head, when calling 911 to inform authorities he is armed with a gun and intends to kill himself, and then has the mindset to deliver a self inflicted shot gun blast to the chest.

I enjoy clever advertising that either makes the reader/viewer think, laugh, or in the case of suicide, pushes the envelope to create publicity and/or conversation (see link below).
